Project Overview

The Municipality of Ajdovščina in Slovenia is taking a data-driven approach to smart city development. By integrating aerial and terrestrial geospatial data into a centralised infrastructure management platform, the municipality is building a more comprehensive view of its urban environment to support planning, maintenance and public safety.

The project, supported by EAASI member Flycom Technologies, brings together multiple data sources, including airborne LiDAR, conventional and true orthophotos, a 3D mesh of the city centre, terrestrial LiDAR and photographic surveys. These datasets are combined with traffic sensor information and road condition assessments to help municipal authorities make better-informed decisions.

From aerial data to an integrated urban model

Flycom Technologies conducted airborne LiDAR and imagery surveys over Ajdovščina, complemented by terrestrial data capture. The airborne surveys collected high-resolution information on street layouts, road surfaces and infrastructure components, contributing to a detailed three-dimensional representation of the urban environment.

Rather than treating each dataset separately, the project integrates airborne information with terrestrial LiDAR and photographic data in a centralised platform. This approach combines the broader coverage offered by aerial surveying with the detailed, ground-level information needed to understand individual infrastructure elements.

The result is a richer picture of the city, providing a foundation for more effective infrastructure management.

Supporting mobility and proactive maintenance

The platform combines geospatial information with traffic monitoring and road damage mapping, helping the municipality assess infrastructure conditions and identify maintenance needs.

By bringing these sources together, city planners can use a more complete evidence base to assess traffic patterns, plan road repairs and allocate resources. The integration of different datasets also helps connect the condition of physical infrastructure with the way it is used, supporting more informed decisions about urban mobility.

Improving emergency preparedness

The benefits extend beyond everyday infrastructure management. A detailed and integrated view of the urban environment can also support emergency services, including fire and medical response teams.

Information on street layouts, road conditions and infrastructure characteristics can help responders assess access routes and plan their movements. Combined with other relevant data, this information can contribute to better situational awareness when rapid decisions are needed.

The role of aerial surveying in smart cities

The Ajdovščina project demonstrates how aerial surveying can contribute to smart city initiatives beyond the initial collection of geospatial data. By combining airborne capture with terrestrial surveys and integrating the resulting datasets into a wider management platform, Flycom Technologies helps turn detailed spatial information into a practical resource for municipal decision-making.
